musical timeline

some albums i like, organized by original release date. the little reviews i'm writing aren't meant to be comprehensive in any way; there are plenty of people who can do that much better than me. my reviews simply represent what the album means to me. album here is defined pretty loosely: i will be including EPs and pretty much anything longer than a single.

currently this is a work in progress, and i'll be changing formatting and adding more albums for a while. i'm starting with the oldest and moving towards the present. once i have everything in that i already like, i'm thinking i'll write more reviews for anything else i listen to. if i like it enough anyway.

The College Dropout

Kanye West

i've always thought the title and cover of this album make it kinda look like a children's book. after producing hit after hit for Jay-Z, Kanye finally got his chance to make a rap debut. the opportunity was not wasted. this is one of the greatest hip-hop albums of the early 2000s, and an intro to one of the most incredible rap careers of all time.

Frou Frou

the demo "A New Kind Of Love" was released a few years ago and became very popular. that song is not on this album, but it was my introduction to Frou Frou. Imogen Heap's vocals fit like a glove over her and Guy Sigworth's production. i really like to enjoy this album while going for a nice autumn walk.

Discovery

Daft Punk

early 2000s pop music owes a lot to "Discovery". Daft Punk's debut, "Homework" was a standout album in 90s house music. "Discovery" throws it all out and pushes the genre forward. the robots demonstrate their deep love for music through the sample heavy production. with only their second album, Daft Punk put their absolute mastery of synth and sampler on display.

Operation: Doomsday

MF DOOM

probably my favorite MF DOOM album? i like the production with all his albums, DOOM always seems to know exactly what he's looking for. the beats match his flow while adding a unique flavor that make each song super memorable and catchy.

Cherry Peel

of Montreal

when i was a lot younger i found a fanmade music video for "Tim I Wish You Were Born a Girl" and it intrigued me. i didn't know a lot of things back then. anyway, i didn't really think about that song again after that for a long time until just recently. that old song came into my head again, and i decided to listen to the rest of the album. some might call it a bit cheesey, but i really enjoyed its catchy beats, entertaining lyrics, and charming vocals.

Pinkerton

Weezer

the only Weezer albums i've listened to are the blue album and "Pinkerton". i think a lot of people really dislike "Pinkerton" and i can understand why. Rivers is kind of a creep the entire time, and it might sound a bit unpolished, but both of these are intentional choices. the album feels truly genuine to me, like something you'd find on youtube with 300 views, in the best way.

Debut

Björk

i came across this album on youtube, when "Venus as a Boy" came up on my feed. i was instantly drawn into the hypnotic instrumental, nostalgic and new all at once. then Björk's vocals glided delicately in and i knew i had to listen to the rest of the album. i could write an entire essay just on that one song, and the album keeps it up, a wonderful beginning for Björk.

Timely!!

Anri

"Timely!!" was my introduction to city pop, and it remains probably my favorite album in the genre. i don't really listen to a lot of city pop, and i know this one is considered pretty basic, but i find it really nice to listen to on a nice spring or summer day. a great album for an afternoon drive.

All Things Must Pass

George Harrison

George is my favorite Beatle, and he was seriously stifled when he was part of the band. its common knowledge John and Paul wrote pretty much everything for the band, and kept George out of it. finally set free, George immediately put together what is in my opinion the best solo album of any of the Beatles.

Abbey Road

The Beatles

i got into the Beatles backwards: this was the album that really got me to pay attention to them. i was listening to this album while doing some work, barely listening, until "The Long One". somewhere in the middle of "Mean Mr Mustard" i noticed that the songs had all been blending in to each other, and i was spellbound until "The End". i didn't know at the time, but i was listening to the band i would come to love play themselves out, closing their final album with some of their best work.

Rubber Soul

The Beatles

probably my favorite Beatles album right now, but i do change my mind on that pretty often. the Beatles' work improved significantly with this album, breaking free of the simple "puppy love" themes of their previous work. of course, pretty much all the songs are still about love (this is the Beatles we're talking about), but songs like Paul's nostalgic "In My Life" and John's rather concerning "Run For Your Life" begin to explore more complex ideas relating to love.
